YNAB Classic App Reviews

Get over it

This is the best budgeting software (for home and business) that Ive ever used. If you are familiar with YNAB, and using it correctly, then you have found a good deal of money using their software. The average, over a couple of polls, was something like $200 average found in the first month and $3000 found over the next 3-4 months. That definitely tracked my experience at the time. I was curious to see the updated logo recently so I went to their web site to check out what was going on. Initially, I was a little non-plussed with the move to a subsciption based model as I have to deal with a lot of that at work and some companies really do try to stick it to you... However, after a moment of reflect I realized that, considering the amount of money YNAB saves me, I would gladly pay the eqivalent of $3.75 a month or $0.86 a week just to have the automatic bank import functionality. In fact, just to have a team as dedicated as this one seems to be to helping people is worth that much to me. If you havent found a lot of money using YNAB in the past then you are doing it wrong. If you are having conniption about the new service model then think about what you are getting for a moment. If it still seems unreasonable then quit using YNAB and start using a spreadsheet or piece of paper to do the same thing. Get it to work as flawlessly as YNAB. Then tally up the amount of time you are spending replicating something that someone else made (that works a heck of a lot better than your version) and see how much you spent on your replacement. (I am able to recreate it but my time spent would eclipse the annual subscription and mine would not be nearly as nice) If you are still freaking out about the subscription model then keep using the old version. Im sure it will work fine for years and years to come. No body is twisting your arm. To those who use try to use the "dont get caught paying for subscription budgeting tool" because it breaks the first law of the bdugeting universe: If you cant manage to pay less than $4 a month for the very thing that is helping you find 50-100 times more than that and changes the very way you manage your money then you have much bigger problems than YNAB can solve.

Thoughts

Im giving this app five stars because its the best iOS app Ive ever used. Seriously, the user experience decimates all. I am a newer YNAB 4 user who has been using for 4 months and have told many people with great enthusiasm that YNAB 4 is the most thoughtfully and well-crafted app Ive ever seen. I have a long background in software engineering, so I dont make statements like that lightly. YNAB has also saved my life! I noticed the forums are not really the place to post general comments on the product and many comments have been removed from the Facebook page. This is unfortunate but understandable. Since the App Store has become the unofficial place to provide feedback, I will share my general thoughts about the new web-based YNAB here. First, the positive. - The new YNAB is beautiful. The overall design is fresh, functional, and linear. - I like the idea of being decoupled from Dropbox. - I like it that my info is now safe behind a password so my kids cant just open the laptop and take a peek. - I love the training and information that accompanies the product and this has always its true competitive advantage. This is why I told my mom about it. I know she can watch the video and attend the trainings so she will get it. YNAB doesnt succeed based on how well I train her. She can hear it directly from the experts. - I like the new features like age of money, etc. I see the value in these features. Thank you. - Most importantly, I have faith that over a short amount of time, most or all of the major wrongs will be made right. The commitment to the product is clearly evident. Now to my other thoughts. - I absolutely WILL NOT buy the new version and never will until the transaction import feature is brought back. This saves me lots of time and was what sealed the deal. I know the philosophy is to "feel" every transaction as you enter it but for a very busy me this is just a demotivational grind. The import in YNAB 4 is flawless. - The product wasnt ready for launch. Plain and simple. Tremendous thought put into design that has been blemished by lack of execution. Will the same quality control go into security? I certainly hope not! - Today Im seeing lots of weird characters in YNAB. Most are an A with a tilde over it. The hex value is c3. These are even appearing on the login screen! Inside YNAB, they are everywhere. This is very distracting. How did this happen? - The calculator that was brought back is half baked compared to the original. You could start with an operator before and then provide the number. For example, if I had $100, I could type -50 to subtract $50. Now I have to type 100-50 for the same result. Its not difficult to store the original value onclick(). Why not do this? - Thanks to the subscription model, youve taken many people who have financial issues and reminded them of it every single month. I know subscription works for many products but Im skeptical when it comes to budgeting software. I wouldnt be surprised if this works against you. I truly hope not. Too late to go back? I really wish you would rethink this decision. - A vote on priorities - I know reports are missing. While they would be nice to have back, I would rather see the issues above fixed first. I look forward to trying the product again in 6-9 months to see how it is going. If transaction import is back, Ill happily make the switch to keep current. I do wish you the best and thank you for YNAB 4. Again, it changed my life and for that I will always be grateful.

And so it ends...

Used to be great. Now it wont sync, is buggy, and generally disappoints. Im done recommending ynab.

Disappointed in YNAB business decision

We were doing so well. Last year around October or November I bit the bullet and purchased YNAB for $60. Im still using it. I am making good progress paying down debt. It was worth the price. But now theres going to be a subscription??! Five dollars a month? No thanks. Ill probably use the four principles and find some other way to record my transactions.

Very disappointed

This app does not work!! It does not sync and does not calculate the amount into the budget. Very disappointed. Can I get my $60 refunded?

Interesting and possibly foolish move

Not excited that they are going to be changing this. We already paid what seemed like a ton for it...why not just make regular updates and improvements to it? Doubt we will make the jump, and definitely will be open to something else if we can find it. And the icon! THE ICON!!!!

Nooooooooooooooo!

"Luke, I am your father!" Seriously? $5/month? Quicken Deluxe is only $30/yr if you feel you have to upgrade yearly. Thats about as bonehead a move as XBOX charging you to play your own game on a friends system. Did you hire Steve Ballmer? If so, fire him and youll get 5 stars back.

Awesome software but

Subscription? Nope... Maybe time to find different software... I have been suggesting this software to my students every semester. Not now :(

Worthless

The app is worthless. To use this app you have to use the desktop version, and Im new to YNAB, and want a mobile option.

Another disappointed customer

The subscription model version has totally changed how I view the creators and the product. Motivated by greed and is antithesis to the tenets they preach.

Bad business move

Deploying new business plan to subscription based with totally abandoning current customers was a bold move but big mistake. The reason why I like this app is because I didnt have to open a browser and pay subscription fees monthly. RIP YNAB.

YNAB4 is amazing!

The new web-based service is terrible!

Another disappointment.

I left a negative review for the new version of YNAB after installing it because most of the functionality had been broken, it was too much of a change from the old version for me to use. I fell back on using the old desktop app and it still works great. I just now opened up the mobile app for the first time in a long time to input some transactions only to find the sync is broken. Surprise surprise. It seems as if they plan to completely abandon the old users and force everyone to the new subscription model. I wouldnt mind paying honestly but the web app is far less powerful than the desktop app its unusable. What a shame, I used to be evangelical about this app...

Sad

$5 a month for a finance program, no way, good bye. It was good until this move.

Deleting YNAB for good.....

Been a loyal customer for years. I sent YNAB some money in the form of getting some friends and family to buy the program. We all loved it, for many reasons but phone to desktop sync was a big selling point. Sync has not worked in months. I just read reviews to find Im not the only one. I refuse to invest any more money thank already have for the YNAB programs. After all, I AM on a budget, as I "need a budget." My budget does not include money for budgeting software. AGAIN. Im devastated by this, as I contacted support and they kept telling me it was a computer issue. My husband works in computer technology and knows how to fix the issues they claim Im having. It is not a technological issue, it is within the code writing of the program---hence, they planned it that way. Look at all the other reviewers with the same complaint. Could they all be having "technical issues?" I used to believe in the philosophy and the people behind this great idea, but now I feel like they are just trying to find a way to force all of their current customers to shell out more money. I am done handing over my hard earned money to YNAB.

Worst customer experience ever!!!

I swear - this is my first review ever. But cant just pass it. Are you, guys, seriously pricing your app? Im not even able to start using it! Last night I downloaded mobile app and spent 3-4 hours on setting up Ynab on the desktop. I didnt even know that there was an app should be downloaded so I did everything in browser. Today I decided to sync it with my phone - its completely busted! It doesnt sync saying that iCloud sync is not enabled for my account. Ok, I tried to enable it - no option for it in browser! Ok, I downloaded Ynab4 and tried to open my newly created budget - no option for it, I dont have any files saved on my machine. Ok, I tried to upgrade to the newer version on the desktop - no, it crashes. For syncing 3 hours more was spent today. NO LUCK. Any suggestions? How do you, guys, want new customers to avoid that much frustration? HORRIBLE SYNCING SETUP - why do I have to use third party? Ive never used Dropbox before, I had to download it on my devices - hate it! Why I cant just sign in with my account on mobile app and get all my data synced????? Are you still living in 1990s? Even if you offer it to me for free now Ill have to think about using this crap really hard. Good luck.

Please FIX!! Suggestions Please dont give up on us!!!

The app keeps crashing when I try to enter a transaction. And now it wont open back up. I dont know if it couldnt handle special characters in the transaction notes or not. PLEASE FIX THIS GLITCH!! Can you please add these functions: -Change the allotted amount and name on the budget items -Move around categories and subcategories -Option to which screen the app starts on (for example: starting on a specific checking acct page)

Completely broken

I cant sync this app with my desktop version. It is completely useless and insulting.

4 Year User. Now Im moving on.

Ive strongly supported and recommended YNAB over the last 4 years. Not anymore. They have alienated their current customer base by forcing (yes, forcing. The app no longer syncs) us to either pay their monthly fee or use a different app. Im sure you can guess which one Im doing.

Five to One

How disappointing can greed be! Hope you all learn a good lesson from this stupid decision. Used to be a good app and enjoyed using it. Now theres nothing classic about it.
